Battlesteads Observatory

Battlesteads Observatory was born from a vision to create a welcoming, accessible, and state-of-the-art space for stargazing. Designed and built by our Director, Roy, the observatory was made possible through the support and funding of the owners of Battlesteads Hotel and Restaurant.
From this collaboration, a lasting partnership was formed, bringing astronomy closer to the community and visitors alike.
One of the key aspects that makes Battlesteads Observatory unique is its design….

Traditional observatories often feature a large white dome with a narrow slit, where the telescope aligns with the opening. In this setup, the telescope and dome rotate together, meaning only one person at a time can observe through the eyepiece.
Our observatory takes a different approach. Instead of a fixed dome, we designed a fully retractable roof, opening the entire sky to everyone. This allows multiple visitors to enjoy the night sky at once—while one person uses the telescope, others can explore the cosmos with binoculars or simply take in the vastness of the universe above.
This thoughtful design ensures that every visitor has a chance to fully experience the wonders of space, making Battlesteads Observatory a place where learning, discovery, and awe-inspiring moments come together under the stars.

This picture captures a key moment in the construction of Battlesteads Observatory, the digging of the foundation for the concrete pillar that now supports our powerful 14″ SCT telescope.
This stand-alone pillar is separated by a few centimeters from the rest of the decking, preventing vibrations from people walking around from affecting the telescope. This design ensures stability for precise observations and imaging, allowing visitors to explore the universe with clarity.
In keeping with the hotel’s commitment to sustainability, the observatory was constructed using a combination of locally sourced renewable wood and other eco-friendly materials.
From these humble beginnings, the observatory has grown into a premier destination for stargazing and astronomical discovery! Thinking of building your own observatory? We’d love to help! Click here to submit a query through our contact page.
